Hi, I'm Romelle. I help expats actually speak Dutch.
I'm a Dutch teacher based in Amsterdam. For the past few years I've been teaching expats from 20+ countries how to go from "I can't say a word" to "I just chatted with my neighbor in Dutch" — and I love every minute of it.
Why I started Convo in Dutch
When I started teaching Dutch, I noticed the same thing over and over: smart, motivated expats who'd been "studying Dutch" for months — sometimes years — and still couldn't have a real conversation. They knew the grammar. They knew the words. They'd done Duolingo every day. But the moment a Dutch person said something to them, they froze.
The problem was never their effort. The problem was the methods. Most courses focus on grammar drills, fill-in-the-blank exercises, and memorizing rules. None of that prepares you for the messy reality of actually speaking a language with another human.
So I built Convo in Dutch around what really works: real conversations from day one, focused on the situations expats actually face — ordering a coffee, talking to your kid's teacher, surviving small talk with a Dutch in-law. Less grammar, more speaking. Less perfection, more progress.
How I teach

Speaking from day one
You start producing Dutch in your very first lesson — even if it's just a single word. The earlier you speak, the faster you grow.

Real-life context
Every lesson is built around a real situation: the gemeente, the supermarket, your work, your neighbors. Vocabulary you'll actually use.

Mistakes are fine
Perfection is the enemy of progress. I'll correct you, but I'll never make you feel bad about a mistake. Mistakes are how you learn.
Who I work with
Mostly expats living in the Netherlands — from the UK, US, India, Brazil, Italy, Turkey, China, and 15+ other countries — who want to feel at home in their adopted country. Some are absolute beginners. Some have been here for years and finally want to commit. Some want to chat with their kids' classmates' parents. Some want to do their job in Dutch.
